5-day Intensive Training in Development & Delivery of Live Theatre Audio Description

Audio Description in the Theatre

Singapore Theatre Company (formerly Singapore Repertory Theatre) is committed to advancing access in the arts in Singapore. Following the first-ever specialist-led Audio Description training conducted in Singapore in 2018, 31 STC productions have been described by a community of professionally trained describers.

With the support of GIC, STC will work with the Access Arts Hub to grow this community, training Audio Describers based in Singapore who can support the growth of this service throughout Singapore in 2024 and beyond.

What is Audio Description?

Audio Description provides access to the visual elements of media – action, costumes, set and settings, scene changes, gestures, facial expressions, sight gags, etc. – that are essential to the understanding of the work. This occurs in media such as television/ film, museum exhibitions, theatre and a variety of live events. While primarily designed for people who are blind or vision-impaired (VI), Audio Description can also be assistive for people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder and people who have a print disability such as dyslexia, colour blindness and other learning difficulties.

5-day Intensive Training in Development & Delivery of Live Theatre Audio Description:

This 5-day intensive training will support participants in writing vivid, accurate, and effective audio descriptions. In addition to the content included in the 1-day masterclass, it will cover how to prepare scripts for testing, delivery and recording, as well as pre-show material such as pre-show notes and touch tours, providing participants with the essential skills needed to produce an effective audio description service for theatre based on best practices. At the end of the training, participants will test their skills on a live description of an STC show with feedback from a VI consultant. Due to the intensity, this training is limited to 10 participants.

No prior training in audio description required.
