Based on Miss Julie by August Strindberg

"SENSATIONAL. THE PERFORMANCES ARE ELECTRIFYING." - THE INDEPENDENT

"THE TEMPERATURE NEVER STOPS RISING" - NEW YORK TIMES

Following sell-out runs and sensational reviews worldwide, this multi-award winning 'smash hit that has been wowing audiences' (Daily Telegraph) comes to Singapore for a strictly limited season.

In the smouldering kitchen of a remote South African farmhouse, twenty years after the end of apartheid, a single night of brutality and tenderness unfolds between a black farm labourer and his white master's daughter. The visceral struggles of contemporary South Africa are laid bare as the couple's deadly attraction spirals out of control and they battle over power, sexuality, memory, mothers and land.

This explosive new adaptation of Strindberg's classic Miss Julie, from the internationally acclaimed director Yaël Farber and Cape Town's Baxter Theatre Centre, 'gets straight to the drama's dark, steamy heart' (The Guardian).

    The Laramie Project

Presented by SRT's The Young Co.
    25 - 26 Jul 2014
DBS Arts Centre - Home of SRT

A play that confronts the destructive power of bullying and hate, in all forms.

In October 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Five weeks later, Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, and over the course of the next year, conducted more than 200 interviews with people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project, a chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. The Laramie Project is one of the most performed plays in America today.

For the young students of SRT's The Young Co., the play challenges them on so many levels; the use of multiple roles, clear storytelling, naturalistic dialogue and character representation, the responsibility of portraying real people, as well as working on an extremely emotive subject matter with sensitivity and care. Although originally written in 1998, sixteen years later, Matthew Shepard’s story still reverberates, urging us on to confront the destructive power of bullying and hate, in all forms.

“Theatre should matter, and The Laramie Project reminds us, exhilaratingly and compellingly, why it's so necessary for us to come together, as an audience to share stories that help us understand who we are and demonstrate the power of the human spirit to triumph over bigotry and violence,” Daniel Jenkins, Director and Associate Director of SRT on why he chose this play as The Young Co.’s graduation show.

Cast: Egan Chan, Miriam Cheong, Chin Ruiyuan, Tiffany Ann Dass, Prabu Devaraj, Huang Shibei, Deborah Lee, Clancey Jessica Ryan, Syafiqah Shamsheralam, Lauren Sim, Vignesh Singh Dennis Sofian, Benjamin Spratt, Lareina Tham.
