Bringing Bold, Physical Storytelling to Singapore

SRT’s Centre for Creative Learning is working with over 70 local teaching artists throughout the year to offer a wide range of “theatre skills for life skills’ learning platforms. On a regular basis we also invite outstanding international practitioners and theatre companies to offer workshops not easily found in Singapore.

One such partnership is with Frantic Assembly whom we have worked with since 2018, offering workshops in the physical theatre company’s unique and renowned methodology. We were thrilled to be able to invite them back again, and Frantic practitioners Marc Pouani and Gavin Maxwell were engaged for a full week of educating and upskilling students, practitioners and teaching artists in the Frantic method.

“Mark and Gavin are great facilitators, I really appreciated that they kept the workshop open and introduced different building blocks for devising. I found their sharing and directing in the advance workshop helpful in giving some insights to their process. Although it was a very physical workshop, I felt safe because they were non discriminating to size and shapes of the different bodies and pushed us to challenge limits in a safe way.”
- Auderia Tan, Theatre Practitioner and Teaching Artist

Founded in 1994, Frantic Assembly focuses on presenting brave, bold and unconventional theatre through a delicate balance of being physically dynamic, with being open and fragile. Over the years, Frantic Assembly has grown to become one of UK’s most successful theatre companies with multiple accolades including a 2015 Tony Award for The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time. Frantic Assembly also worked on the choreography for SRT’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Macbeth.

Frantic Assembly is also known for Ignition, a free, nationwide talent development programme for young people aged 16 – 24.
Throughout their time here, Marc and Gavin worked with over 200 students from ten secondary schools and colleges in both Singapore and Malaysia in the Frantic method of storytelling through physical movement and expressions. They also upskilled nearly 40 educators, practitioners and teaching artists through professional development workshops, and spent a Saturday working with our very own members of The Young Company and Inclusive Young Company.

“I really enjoyed the class! I want more. Loved how we immediately got into it, no time wasted. Teachers were clear and engaging and gave us as much as they could in the short amount of time.”
- Tan Rui Shan, Theatre Practitioner

With a focus on the importance and power of collaboration, constant improvement and the power of storytelling, the Frantic workshops were greatly received by participants of all ages. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Frantic Assembly that pushes creativity, boundary and harnesses the power of theatre on and off stage.
