No Spot of Ground – A Walking-Writing Workshop by Centre 42

Saturday, 16 Nov 2024, 10:00am – 12:00pm

Part-scavenger hunt and part-writing workshop, No Spot of Ground - A Walking-Writing Workshop provides a space for you to excavate your own relationship with memory and forgetting through a series of guided, site-specific explorations. Playwrights Choy Chee Yew and Danial Matin will lead participants through a series of exercises to create a short written work, be it poetry, prose, or dramatic scene, that draws on their own memories and amnesia of spaces in Singapore. No prior writing experience is required for these workshops. Participants are encouraged to bring along any writing device (pen and notebook, tablet, or phone) and to dress comfortably for some walking.

No Spot of Ground is presented by Centre 42 and facilitated by past and present artists-in-residence of Centre 42's Playwright's Professional Development Residency.

Danial Matin (he/him)

Danial Matin has written plays about love, grief, and suicidality. He is interested in ideas of personal and historical memory, and normalizing representations of marginal communities and issues. Recent accolades include Here Where You Were (M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, 2024), Ghazal of the Banana Tree’s Heart (Singapore Art Week, 2024), Asymptote (Singapore International Festival of the Arts, 2023), and Before You Go (independent, 2022). He is a writer at Playwrights Commune, a creative at Matter.Less, and was a resident at Centre 42’s Playwright’s Professional Development Residency pilot. Imaginative narratives about intimacy and the interpersonal are close to his heart, next to bubble tea.

Chow Chee Yew

Choy Chee Yew is a Singaporean theatre performer, playwright, and arts manager who trained professionally at the Intercultural Theatre Institute. As a performer, he has been involved with youth theatre organisations such as Buds Youth Theatre and The Second Breakfast Company in Singapore. He also has extensive working experience in fundraising and marketing communications with The Theatre Practice, Singapore's longest-standing professional bilingual theatre institution. He aspires to continue creating original Singaporean works that speak for the voiceless and question cultural norms in society. He also intends to deepen his training, particularly in the fields of Biomechanics (Meyerhold), Suzuki Method of Acting, Viewpoints, and Lecoq. He is also an emerging playwright who has won third prize twice (2022, 2023) for the 24- Hour Playwriting Competition by T:>Works. His original piece, Another Time With You, was selected by Centre 42's New Script Residency for a table read and further development.
