2-Day Training: Sign Language Interpretation for the Theatre

Singapore Theatre Company (STC), formerly Singapore Repertory Theatre, is committed to advancing access in the arts in Singapore. Since 2018, 20 STC productions have featured Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) interpretation by a community of SgSL interpreters.

With the support of GIC, STC will work with the Access Arts Hub to conduct a 2-day Theatre Interpreting training. This training aims to equip SgSL interpreters with the specific skills and techniques required to interpret for theatre based on overseas best practices, ensuring that the d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing community feel welcome in the theatre, and supporting the growth of this service throughout Singapore in 2024 and beyond.

Christopher Tester

The Trainer:

The training will be led by Christopher Tester, a US-based Deaf interpreter of American and British Sign Language, as well as International Sign. He is also an actor, consultant, and educator with a PhD in Sign Language Interpretation and Translation from Heriot-Watt University. He has interpreted and consulted for various shows, including Broadway and off-Broadway, as well as for the Julliard Theatre Interpreting Program.

He is certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and holds Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) and Speciality Certificate: Legal (SC: L). He is also an accredited International Sign (IS) interpreter through the WFD-WASLI organizations.

The Training:

This 2-day Theatre Interpreting training is aimed at experienced Deaf and hearing SgSL interpreters. The training will cover Interpreting/Translation Theory for theatre, text analysis activities, and theatre logistics, as well as practice on archival videos of STC shows, group sharing, and feedback.

This training is not suitable for those who are new to SgSL or interpreting.

The training will be conducted in International Sign (IS). An SgSL interpreter will be working alongside the trainer.
